2025 ACJC H2 Math Paper Review: Intimidating at First Glance, Standard at Its Core
The 2025 ACJC H2 Math paper is one that creates a strong first impression—but not necessarily for the right reasons. At a glance, several questions appear intimidating, giving students the sense that this is going to be a long and mentally draining paper. For some, this fear factor alone is enough to slow them down, causing them to take the full three hours to complete the paper instead of finishing ahead of time, as many average students typically do in the actual A Level H2 Math examination.
However, once the initial intimidation wears off and students begin working through the questions, the paper reveals itself to be far more familiar than expected. This is not a paper that truly challenges a diligent student. Rather, it tests confidence, composure, and the ability to stay calm when faced with questions that look harder than they actually are.
The clear anchor question of this paper is Question 11 on parametric equations. While this question may appear insightful to some, students who are well-prepared will quickly recognise its roots. The original version of this question—widely regarded as genuinely insightful—came from an RVHS H2 Math paper. ACJC has since modified it to align with the new syllabus, requiring students to first derive a Cartesian equation before proceeding to integration for area and volume. While technically sound, the insight here lies more in execution than originality.
The vectors question, although not contextualised, also provides some challenge. Raw technical vectors questions are often underestimated, and this one does require students to be precise in their method and reasoning. That said, the difficulty remains controlled, and the insights gained are incremental rather than transformative.
Beyond these moments, the bulk of the paper consists of standard questions. While they may not be identical to those found in revision packages, the skills required are immediately recognisable. The paper introduces small twists that can make the process feel tedious, but not conceptually demanding. A well-trained student should have no issue navigating these variations and securing a respectable B grade or higher.
Ultimately, this is where my disappointment lies. The paper relies heavily on psychological intimidation rather than genuine depth. Questions that initially appear complex quickly unravel into familiar territory once students commit to solving them. In that sense, the paper functions more as a test of exam temperament than mathematical insight.
That does not mean the paper has no value. On the contrary, it serves as a useful timed practice before the actual A Levels. Students attempting this paper will learn an important lesson: not every “scary-looking” question is difficult, and panic is often more damaging than lack of skill. Used correctly, this paper helps students train composure, pacing, and confidence under pressure—qualities that matter greatly on exam day.
