Short writeup:

2025 SAJC JC1 H2 Chemistry WA1 Review: Brutal for JC1s, Gold for JC2s

The 2025 SAJC H2 Chemistry WA1 paper is a wake-up call. For JC1 students, it feels like a trap. But for JC2s, this is a goldmine.

While it may appear unfair to subject new JC1s to such a tough paper, this exam brilliantly doubles as a revision tool—especially for JC2s who want to sharpen their fundamentals before diving into harder organic or physical chem chapters.

What Makes This Paper So Valuable

SAJC didn’t just throw together a hard paper. They borrowed ideas from past A-Level questions and embedded them inside layered, multi-concept problems. One standout example is the isotopic abundance question—this time, framed without percentages, tripping up even top students. It's a clever twist on a classic concept.

  • Q1 on atomic structure is intense—technical, detailed, and pushes beyond surface-level definitions.

  • Q4 dives into application, using parts-per-billion and environmental chemistry contexts rarely seen at JC1 level. It's tough, but a glimpse into what the A-Levels might throw at you.

If you’re in JC2, this is the kind of paper that exposes gaps in your knowledge before the prelims do.

Why JC1s Struggled—And Why That’s Okay

Let’s be honest: JC1 students were never going to breeze through this.

  • Question 4 felt borderline impossible for most.

  • Many students skipped large chunks, effectively treating the paper as 25 marks instead of 30.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad paper. In fact, that makes it a perfect tool to train resilience and boost confidence—when used at the right time.

How You Should Use This Paper (And When)

JC1 Students – Attempt only if you’re already strong in Chem or preparing for a high-bar school test. Use it to stretch yourself, not to benchmark.

JC2 Students – This is a must-do. The questions revisit JC1 concepts through fresh applications—ideal for those who want to strengthen their foundational skills before A-Levels.
