Short writeup:

2025 JPJC H2 Chemistry JC1 WA1: A Starter Pack for Promos—But What’s Up With the Bonus Question?

The 2025 JPJC H2 Chemistry JC1 WA1 paper is one that plays it safe—mostly. It sticks to tried-and-tested question types, offering familiar ground for most students. From combustion of hydrocarbons to ionisation energy trends and classic dot-and-cross diagrams, students who’ve kept up with tutorials and revision packages would find the bulk of this paper comfortably within expectations.

That said, the paper includes a curious twist: a bonus question worth 3 marks, excluded from the total 25 marks. This unexpected addition is where things get interesting. The bonus question wasn’t just filler—it carried a small but meaningful degree of insight and creativity, something most students don’t usually encounter in early JC1 assessments. It required a bit more thought and interpretation, making it the most unique feature of this assessment.

However, its exclusion from the total score slightly muddies the water. For students hoping to use this paper to gauge their mastery of the tested topics under exam conditions, the presence of a non-denominated bonus question can be misleading. It creates confusion about whether performance on that question should factor into their self-assessment—especially when the rest of the paper is relatively straightforward.

Still, for most JC1 students, this remains a fair and manageable paper. It serves well as a timed practice or even a kickstarter for revision in the lead-up to promotional exams. The mix of predictable questions and light insights makes it especially suitable for students who may be looking to boost their confidence before moving on to heavier, more application-based assessments.
