The 2024 Chung Cheng High School (Yishun) Prelim E Math Paper 1 is one of those papers that looks manageable at first glance — until you sit down to solve it. Then you quickly realise it’s not about whether you know the content… it’s about whether you can keep your focus through tedious, drawn-out calculations without slipping up.
At first impression, this paper feels like a standard prelim — familiar topics, familiar structure. Some questions even seem lifted from past O-Level papers, such as the partial fractions problem and the circle geometry question. But beneath that familiarity lies a twist: the paper’s real challenge isn’t in spotting the method, but in surviving the slog of getting the right answer without careless mistakes.
While many questions are straightforward in terms of approach, they’re padded with extra steps, longer working, and subtle distractions. Some trigonometry questions are oddly phrased, while others appear to hide key details in plain sight, forcing you to slow down and think twice before writing the next line. The majority of the paper is entirely do-able — provided you have the discipline to stay sharp for every line of your working.
For students used to short-format assessments like Weighted Assessments (WA), this is where the danger lies. A prelim or O-Level paper isn’t a 40-minute sprint — it’s a two-hour endurance event. If you’ve never trained your mind to maintain accuracy over that stretch of time, the sheer length and focus required will catch you off guard.
My recommendation? This is an excellent paper for above-average students to attempt under timed conditions. Mastering this style of paper now will give you a huge advantage when the real exams come.
