Short writeup:

2025 JPJC H2 Chemistry Paper 3 Review: A Subtle Test of Decision-Making

The 2025 JPJC H2 Chemistry Paper 3 is one of the more interesting prelim papers this year, not because it is exceptionally difficult, but because it is stylistically distinct. JPJC has always had a recognisable way of setting questions, and this paper continues that tradition while offering solid conceptual value for students preparing for the A Level H2 Chemistry Paper 3.

Upon first impression, it is clear that this paper is centered on only 2 topics. Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. Every question has an element of inorganic chemistry, in the form of periodicity or transition metals. And every other question is centered on organic chemistry. There is almost no physical chemistry tested in this paper. And hence, this is the biggest weakness of this paper. The lack of range in the topics tested.

What immediately identifies this as a JPJC paper is Question 2. While many schools test organic chemistry together with reaction kinetics, JPJC’s preference for using a concentration–time graph of product formation stands out. Most schools avoid this representation entirely, yet JPJC leans into it and builds a short narrative before introducing an unfamiliar organic reaction mechanism. This combination of context, kinetics and organic chemistry is very deliberate and forces students to move beyond pattern spotting into actual interpretation.

Question 2 is also the clear highlight of the paper. It contains several insights that are genuinely important for students aiming for an A, not because the chemistry is exotic, but because the thinking process required is precise. Students must decide what information matters, what can be ignored, and how to sequence their reasoning logically. This paper does not reward blind memorisation; it rewards clarity of thought.

Interestingly, the most valuable learning point from this paper is not purely conceptual. It lies in decision-making. In Paper 3, students must choose between Question 4 and Question 5 and attempt only one. In this paper, both questions are set on the same topic, with very similar difficulty and presentation style. This puts students in an uncomfortable but realistic position. Many Paper 3 practices allow students to instantly identify the “safer” option. This paper does not. Students must make a judgment call under time pressure, a skill that is rarely trained explicitly but often decides grades in the actual A Levels.

Because of this, the 2025 JPJC H2 Chemistry Paper 3 is more than just another practice paper. It is an excellent diagnostic tool. It reveals whether a student truly understands their strengths, manages uncertainty well, and can make calm decisions under exam conditions. These are precisely the qualities that separate strong students from merely prepared ones.

If you are a JC student who finds that you can solve questions but struggle to decide which questions to attempt, or if you often second-guess yourself during exams, this paper is especially worth doing under timed conditions and reviewing carefully with guidance.
