Short writeup:

2025 EJC H2 Chemistry Paper 3 Review — A paper recommended for the above average.

If there is one word students use to describe the 2025 EJC H2 Chemistry Paper 3, it’s this:

Intimidating.

And honestly? They’re not wrong.

This paper immediately confronts students with diagrams that look alien, unusual layouts that spark anxiety, and question structures that make even confident students pause. Many walk in thinking, “This cannot be standard.” And that fear alone is what throws them off — before they’ve even read the first part (a).

But beneath the surface, an entirely different truth reveals itself.

A Paper Designed to Look Hard — But Isn’t Actually Hard

What most students don’t realise is this:

Much of the 2025 EJC Paper 3 is adapted from EJC's own older prelim questions… but toned down. Many of the “scary” diagrams are just re-packaged versions of ordinary content. The structure is meant to intimidate at first glance, but the actual chemistry behind each question? Surprisingly accessible.

For students who can remain calm, peel away the theatrical presentation, and approach the paper with clarity…this is actually a very doable paper.

And that is exactly why this paper is such an interesting case study for anyone preparing for A-Levels.

Irrelevant Yet Insightful — A Strange Balance

This paper is unusual in the sense that:

  • The presentation of questions is largely irrelevant to what students will see in the A-Level H2 Chem exam

  • But the insights hidden within the questions are meaningful — especially for students beyond average ability

EJC clearly enjoys making papers that look nothing like other schools’. And the lack of other JCs adopting similar formatting explains something important:

Most schools do not find this style useful for exam prep.

Still, certain questions inside the paper combine ideas from across:

  • Physical Chemistry

  • Inorganic Chemistry

  • Organic Chemistry

…in ways that genuinely test conceptual understanding across the syllabus.

Which means this paper has value — but not for everyone.

Who Should Attempt This Paper?

This is not a paper I recommend for every JC student.

But for above-average students, or those who are comfortable with unconventional question layouts, the paper is a strong timed practice to test:

  • Confidence under stress

  • Ability to ignore distracting diagrams

  • Deep conceptual understanding across multiple topics

For everyone else, the safest (and most productive) approach would be:

Attempt each question individually with a mentor who can unpack the insights and explain why the question matters.

This prevents fear from clouding understanding, and trains students to recognise that “strange-looking” does not equal “difficult.”
