Short writeup:

The 2024 Deyi Secondary School E Math Paper 2 stands out as a paper designed with weaker students in mind. Compared to the more complex and twist-heavy prelim papers from other schools, this one offers a smoother path forward — one where most students can attempt confidently without being overwhelmed.

The biggest strength of this paper lies in its reasonable difficulty. Many of the questions are direct and familiar, mirroring the kind of problems found in practice papers or revision packages. For students who struggle with confidence in Mathematics, this style of paper provides a rare opportunity to finish most of the exam without feeling lost. Even the last question, which is traditionally a real-world application problem in the O-Level E Math Paper 2, is presented without excessive layers of trickery.

That said, it’s not entirely without challenges. For example:

  • The trigonometry question added a subtle twist by presenting a north compass drawn differently, which influenced how students interpreted the bearings.

  • The mensuration question required the application of similar triangles before students could progress to solving it — a small but deliberate test of conceptual understanding.

Overall, I would classify the paper as average in difficulty but effective in design. It gives weaker students a realistic chance to practice under exam conditions while still encountering small twists that prevent complacency. For students who usually find themselves discouraged by tougher prelim papers, this one serves as a motivational boost — proof that they can solve questions and build momentum.

From a preparation strategy point of view, I recommend students — especially those struggling with confidence — to keep this paper in their stash as a go-to practice when they want to keep in touch with Math but may not feel ready to tackle the Ten-Year Series or the tougher prelim papers from schools like Cedar or Nan Hua. Think of this as a warm-up paper before moving on to more demanding ones.

Why this matters for O-Level students

As someone who reviews papers across schools in Singapore, my role is not just to tell you whether a paper is hard or easy, but to help you see how to use each paper strategically. The Deyi Secondary School 2024 E Math Paper 2 is particularly valuable because it helps the weaker student stay consistent with practice — and consistency is what ultimately bridges the gap between a borderline pass and a confident distinction.

This kind of analysis is exactly what I bring into my classes at my tuition centre. I don’t just teach formulas or spoon-feed answers. I help students learn how to study smarter, know which papers to prioritize, and build a system that balances confidence with challenge.
