Short writeup:
The 2023 Anderson Secondary School A Math Paper 2 presents a formidable challenge for most students. Upon first glance, even for an experienced eye, the questions seem tedious and mentally exhausting to complete.
Several of the problems require multiple extra steps and deep thinking, overshadowing any valuable insights with complex calculations and heavy algebraic manipulation. While the paper offers similar insights to other preliminary exams, the barrage of lengthy and unfamiliar questions can overwhelm students, preventing them from learning on the spot as they normally might.
Unfortunately, this paper's difficulty lies more in its tediousness than in its ability to provoke critical thinking. Diligent students may even recognize some questions as irrelevant or too far removed from what they might face in the actual O-level A Math exam. Even familiar questions may trip students up, not because of conceptual complexity but because of the likelihood of making careless mistakes amid the intense algebraic workload.
In conclusion, this is not a well-set paper. I wouldn't recommend it to students seeking meaningful practice. However, for students who are confident in their ability to score an A in the O-levels and are looking for a challenge to stretch their problem-solving skills, this paper might be worth attempting.
