Short writeup:
In our latest review, we delve into the 2022 Victoria Junior College H2 Chemistry JC1 Mid-Year Exam Paper 2. In this paper, a total of approximately 8 JC1 topics were tested and they are commonly taught across all JC in JC1. Even though the scope is limited, this will be a highly challenging paper for many students, potentially even to JC2.
Upon first impression, most of the questions are unfamiliar to students. Very few questions were taken or inspired by tutorial questions while the rest of the questions are contextual application questions, of which, some were taken from Preliminary Exam papers designed for JC2. Hence, most students would be intimidated and their confidence would be dented due to the unfamiliar terrain.
Furthermore, the questions are lengthy and loaded with overwhelming amount of information. In the A levels, typically, one question is set to be the anchor. The one question with information outside of the textbook that requires students to decipher first before being able to solve the question. However, this paper is loaded with many and not to forget, it's meant for the JC1 in the Mid-Year Exams. Indeed, this paper will be challenging to many students.
However, there is a clear strength to this paper. It is a paper that will provide students exposure to various application of Chemistry in real life. And many questions were designed to provide insights to a students' learning. It probes a student's ability to apply chemistry to different context and sieves out the genuinely competent and academically inclined students from the rest.
Overall, it is a decent paper but not necessarily for the JC1. This paper will be more useful for the JC2 in the lead up to their A levels. It will provide a more than decent challenge for a JC2 looking to revise on the JC1 topics that they may have gotten rusty in. For the JC1, this will only serve as a stark reminder of how difficult H2 Chemistry can be and how real the possibility of getting retained in JC1 is.
