Short writeup:

2025 NYJC H2 Math Paper 2 Review — When You Are Restricted From Using Your GC And Why It Matters More Than You Think

Every year, some prelim papers become “just another practice.” And then there are papers like the 2025 NYJC H2 Math Paper 2—a paper that quietly exposes how well you actually understand statistics, and whether your foundations are firm or built entirely on muscle memory.

If you're heading into JC2 in 2026, or you’re a parent supporting a student through this transition year, this is one paper you must keep in your revision stash.

Where This Paper Shines: A Tale of Two Halves

The paper divides itself clearly:

Half 1: Pure Math — straightforward, clean, and generous.

Half 2: Statistics — thoughtful, technical, and concept-driven.

The Pure Math Section: A Gentle Warm-Up

Many students will find the first few questions almost comforting. Some questions are direct, some feel familiar, and one—like Question 4 on tangents and normals—is practically lifted from widely circulated tutorial sets.

It’s obvious what NYJC wanted:Give students marks early, stabilise their confidence, and prepare them to enter statistics in a calmer mental state.

And honestly?

This is smart paper setting.

The Statistics Section: Where the Real Thinking Begins

This is where NYJC flexes.

Instead of throwing students typical, repeated, “revision package style” stats questions, the examiners made a deliberate decision:

“Let’s test whether you actually understand the topic.”

Here’s how they did it:

  • requiring algebraic methods rather than relying on graphing calculators

  • using unfamiliar data sets

  • referencing rarely used results or formulas

  • designing questions that force students to recall how distributions are derived, not just applied

This is the part of the paper that catches rote learners by surprise.

Students who bulldoze with memorised steps will stumble.Students who know why formulas work will shine.

And that is the exact kind of assessment that strongly resembles the spirit of A-Level testing.

Why This Paper Is So Insightful for JC2 Students

Statistics is one of the most intimidating segments of H2 Math for many students.

But here’s the truth:

Most students aren’t weak in stats—they’re weak in foundational reasoning.

The NYJC paper exposes that weakness in a controlled and fair way. And if you spend time understanding the insights behind these questions, you will:

  • score more consistently

  • reduce careless errors

  • recognise patterns across schools

  • build resilience for Paper 2

  • gain confidence for the JC2 Mid-Year Exam (which usually tests only Statistics)

This is why I recommend this paper to every single student, regardless of ability.

Should You Do This Paper Under Timed Conditions?

Absolutely yes.

The questions are manageable. There are no unreasonable curveballs. And completing it within the time limit will sharpen your pacing before higher-stakes exams.

If you’re an average student, this paper trains understanding. If you’re an above-average student, this paper sharpens precision.

If you’re a weaker student, this paper builds structured confidence.
