Short writeup:

The 2023 O-level E Math Paper 2 stands out for its insightful approach, reflecting how Cambridge has evolved in setting examination papers. While much of the paper remains familiar, there are notable changes that students and educators simply cannot ignore.

Firstly, there's a clear shift towards an increased number of application questions. Traditionally, students expect application questions to appear primarily as the last question in Paper 2, with minimal occurrences elsewhere. However, this paper breaks the mold by incorporating application-based questions throughout, challenging students to apply concepts in various contexts, not just at the end.

The paper also stirred significant discussion on Reddit’s SGExams community, particularly concerning the graph plotting question involving an asymptote. This question surprised many because the concept of asymptotes was not explicitly covered in the syllabus. Although the answer didn’t require students to draw an asymptote, it did challenge them to decide whether the graph connects between the x-values of -1 to 1, a decision that sparked controversy among both students and teachers.

Overall, this paper may seem particularly challenging for students who are not mathematically inclined or those not enrolled in Additional Mathematics. It pushes students to make decisions when confronted with unfamiliar questions that may not have been covered by their teachers. Despite this, the paper stands out for the valuable insights it offers. The lessons learned from tackling this paper are substantial, making it a highly recommended resource for students to attempt as timed practice.
