Short writeup:

The 2025 Anglican High School A Math Paper 1 is a sneaky paper. Even though it scaled down on difficulty compared to its predecessors, the paper offers a different kind of challenge — one that requires students to draw upon multiple topics within a single question.

One of the biggest surprises in this paper is the absence of a clear, standalone trigonometry question. In most prelim or O Level A Math papers, trigonometry is often tested on its own — typically starting with the proving of identities before moving on to solving using the identity proven earlier.

However, this paper hides trigonometry within other topics. Both instances appear in calculus questions, where students must first apply a trigonometric identity before proceeding with integration. For example, one question required using the double-angle formula of cosine before the integral could even be solved.

This made the paper challenging in a subtle way. There was little guidance offered — students were expected to recognize, on their own, that the integral could only be evaluated after simplifying with the correct identity. Such questions are uncommon, not only in O Level papers but even in other prelims.

Overall, it is an average paper that still offers meaningful learning value. Some of the skills required are actually taught in the A Level syllabus, and only the more experienced Secondary 4 students would have encountered similar techniques before.

I recommend students to attempt selected questions from this paper individually and review them with a mentor who can guide them through the reasoning process. Doing so will help them sharpen their mathematical instincts and strengthen their ability to make cross-topic connections — a key skill needed to perform confidently in the actual O Level exam.
