Singapore O Level & A Level Chemistry Tuition: Why Practical Skills Need Practice Too

For students searching for Chemistry tuition in Singapore, most tuition programmes naturally focus heavily on theory, calculations and examination questions.

But there is one part of Chemistry that is much harder to practise at home: the practical examination.

As a Chemistry tutor teaching Singapore O Level and A Level H2 Chemistry students, I have seen students who understand titration perfectly on paper but become much less confident when they have to use a burette, pipette an exact volume, swirl a conical flask and judge an endpoint themselves.

That gap between knowing the Chemistry and performing the Chemistry is one of the reasons I developed ChemLab, a Chemistry practical simulation game for students.

Why Titration Can Be Difficult Even When You Know the Theory

The basic instructions for titration sound straightforward:

1.      Transfer a fixed volume using a volumetric pipette.

2.      Fill the burette.

3.      Add an indicator.

4.      Titrate while swirling.

5.      Slow down near the endpoint.

6.      Record a concordant titre.

Actually performing those steps requires considerably more judgement.

Students need to control the burette, recognise when to begin adding solution dropwise and identify the first permanent colour change without overshooting the endpoint.

In the ChemLab titration simulation, students can practise using a pipette and pipette filler, filling a burette, adding indicator, swirling the flask and adding solution in small increments as they approach the endpoint.

The simulator also allows students to repeat the experiment and work towards concordant titre values, just as they would during an actual Chemistry practical.

Why I Use Simulation Together With Chemistry Teaching

Chemistry practical preparation has an unusual limitation.

Students can complete theory questions and past-year papers repeatedly at home, but access to a physical school laboratory is naturally more limited.

That means some practical procedures may only be performed a small number of times before an examination. This is particularly relevant for students who understand the theory but still feel uncertain when handling laboratory apparatus.

My aim with ChemLab is not to replace a real laboratory.

It is to give students another way to practise the thinking, sequencing and decision-making involved in an experiment.

One feature I consider particularly important is allowing students to make mistakes.

For example, the titration simulation allows incorrect experimental choices rather than forcing students down one perfectly scripted path. Students then have to recognise that something has gone wrong and use their Chemistry knowledge to interpret what they see.

That is much closer to the kind of independence required during a practical examination.
