Short writeup:
The 2023 Swiss Cottage Secondary School Pure Chemistry Paper 2 is far from ordinary. Submitted by a fan of my TikTok channel seeking my opinion on its fairness, I found it lacking in this regard.
Nearly every question presented a challenge in multiple ways, not just in the application of knowledge but also in the lengthy and often confusing information provided. This complexity is likely to overwhelm most students.
Additionally, Section B of the paper appeared haphazardly constructed. Some questions were based on A-level concepts, thinly disguised as data-based questions through the use of additional text. This approach is uncharacteristic of O-level exams, which typically do not incorporate A-level syllabus content. Consequently, the paper scored poorly on relevance, barely reaching a 5.
Overall, this paper is only suitable for students already capable of achieving an A1 in O-level Pure Chemistry. It is likely to be too challenging for the average student still striving for top marks. Therefore, I do not recommend using this paper for timed practice. Even for the strongest students, I would suggest selectively attempting specific questions rather than tackling the entire paper.
